Time Scale of Phase Transformation in the Phase Field Model: Incubation Time and Transformation Time

Phase field model is a convenient theoretical tool to study the dynamics of phase transformation. Although it has been used mainly to study the complex dynamics of pattern formation, it can also be used to study very basic properties of the phase transformation in simpler systems. In my talk I will present a detailed numerical study of the time scale of phase transformation in the phase field model. The dynamics of phase transformation due to homogeneous nucleation is found to follow closely the classical Kolmogorov-Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (KJMA) picture. In particular, it is verified, probably for the first time using simulation, that the incubation time (waiting time or induction time) follows closely the prediction of Shneidman and Weinberg theory (J.Non-Cryst.Solid. 160 (1993) 89). In addition, various scenarios of the dynamics of phase transformation due to heterogeneous nucleation are also demonstrated.
