Condensed Matter Physics with Free Electrons in Two Dimensions

Time: 1:20pm, April 28 (Thursday)

Title: Condensed Matter Physics with Free Electrons in Two Dimensions

Speaker: Prof. Francis Willams
   (University Paris-sud, Orsay, France)

Place: Science Building III 1F SC157

Many new condensed matter phenomena have been discovered over the last forty years or
so by studying the behaviour of systems of electrons constrained to free motion
in a uniform two dimensional space subject only to two-body Coulomb interactions.
Some of the more spectacular fundamental physics has been the unexpected discovery of
the quantum Hall effects and the long predicted but previously unattainable
Wigner crystallisation phenomenon. An attempt will be made to sketch a broad picture
of some of the discoveries and a few of their practical applications.
